Research: Cardiac regeneration

Zebra fish and neonatal mouse display robust cardiac regeneration following injury. However, this ability of cardiomyocyte proliferation and regeneration is very limited in adult mouse. It remains unknown why certain non-mammalian species can efficiently regenerate their hearts while mammals fail to do this. It appears that polyploidization of cardiomyocytes can create a barrier to cardiac regeneration, while the causal relationship between them has not yet to be explored. In this case, I focus on investigating the potential mechanism behind them and try to find out some promising approaches to stimulate endogenous regenerative responses in the damaged heart border zone.
